Suatu saat Umar bin Khathab berkeinginan meninjau pasukan kaum muslimin yang sedang berjaga di perbatasan Syam. Beliau memacu kudanya hingga akhirnya sampai diperbatasan Syam. Selepas melakukan inspeksi, Umar beristirahat di tenda Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarah, panglima pasukan kaum muslimin. Ketika itu telah tiba waktu makan siang. Abu Ubaidah menawarkan makan kepada Umar.
“Wahai Amirul Mukminin, apakah mau makan siang dengan menu untuk prajurit atau menu panglima?”
Umar menjawab, “Coba kedua-duanya bawa ke sini.”
Maka petugas menghadirkan makanan prajurit kepada Umar. Isi menunya adalah daging, bubur dan kaldu daging.
“Ini makanan untuk prajurit?” tanya Umar.
Mereka menjawab, “Benar wahai Amirul Mukminin.”
“Kalau begitu, ambilkan makanan yang untuk panglima,” pinta Umar.
Petugas mengambilkan makanan dengan menu untuk panglima. Ternyata isinya hanya remah-remah roti kering, sedikit yogurt, dan beberapa biji kurma.
Umar terkesima. Makanan prajurit lebih “mewah” dibandingkan makanan panglima. Sang panglima memilih makanan yang lebih sederhana.
“Sungguh benar sosok yang telah memberikan engkau gelar sebagai Amiin Hadzihil Ummah.” ucap Umar
Umarpun menangis. “Sungguh Abu Ubaidah adalah orang yang bisa dipercaya oleh umat ini. Sebaik-baik orang yang dapat dipercaya adalah engkau, wahai Abu Ubaidah….” ujar Umar bercucuran air mata.
Ketika tiba kembali di rumah, Umar mengatakan,
غيرتنا الدنيا إلا أنت يا أبا عبيدة
“Dunia telah mengubah kami semua”, ujarnya di sela air mata, “Kecuali engkau, wahai Abu Ubaidah”.
